A wildfire has torn through a remote community of foreign residents in southern Spain overnight, killing at least 12 people as they tried to flee the flames by car and on foot. Authorities said Friday that eight people were injured and 23 remain missing. The head of Andalusia's Emergency Services says most of the victims died after ignoring shelter-in-place orders.
Some attempted to escape along a dry riverbed which, quote, turned into a death trap. Our correspondent in Spain, Sarah Morris, gave us this update. In Spain, and the firefighters in planes and helicopters got back out in Los Gallados.
They're hoping that the wind will change direction today because the forecasters say it could start to blow back over land that's already been ravaged. That could be good news because it could avoid the further spread of these flames. There wouldn't be any fuel for that fire that has been travelling at about 50 kilometres per hour with those winds.
It's been a very difficult job. We saw volunteers and other firefighters out overnight. But, of course, the daylight will bring those water-bombing helicopters and planes back, and that's absolutely crucial.
We know that those 12 people have been confirmed dead. Their autopsies have been carried out, but they have not yet been identified. That will take some time, and it will involve families officially reporting those people as missing.
And as you mentioned, about 23 people are still missing. The police are going into the areas and houses that they can get to, searching roadsides, looking to see if they can locate other people. They may not necessarily be dead.
They may have simply been among those 1,400 people who were evacuated, and perhaps in the confusion they might not have let family members and friends know that they are still alive and safe. And that's kind of what we're going to do now. I'm going to be able to find out more of a tool like this.
