Pour
ceux qui weren't here last week,
vous
vous souvenez que nous avons commencé la première
de
la série de four. Et Pastor Ezra, la semaine
dernière,
introduit
le
sujet de la
question de l
'agriculture
en
Christ.
And
this morning, just as we've read, as Ivana has read the verse
of
John 1, 14,
you
will remember that Pastor Ezra talked about the first part,
the
Word
became
flesh.
And
what we learned last week was that
Jesus is
life himself.
The
Word
became
flesh.
And
we also learned that
healthy
growth
requires healthy
roots.
A
tree can look
very
strong above the ground,
but
its future
is
determined
by
what is below
the
ground.
And
in the same way, Paul writes,
Paul
calls us
to
be rooted
in
Christ.
So
this morning,
why
be rooted
in
Christ? Why Christ?
Why
not simply
in
good morals?
Why
not in good habits?
Why
not just in good theology?
And
very briefly, before I start,
I
can tell you that that
Christianity is
not primarily about ideas. Christianity
is
about presence.
And
that's
what
we will, not discover, but that's what we will try to understand this morning.
And
the Word
became
flesh
and
made His dwelling among us.
What
John is trying to say is that the choice of this Word, dwelt
among
us, is not an accident.
It's
a continuation.
Because
right, if you look at, and I think Pastor Ezra talked about that last week, the Word dwelt among us,
the
Word tabernacled
with
us,
the
Word
pitched
a tent. That's what that expression means. Dwelling among us means pitched a tent, tabernacled with us. because John wanted his people that was reading his letters to go back
to
that idea
of
a God that dwells with these people. And so what I want to do this morning
is
to actually go back from Genesis. We're doing the whole Bible this morning. Genesis to Revelation.
But
I'll try to be quick. We can make it in the 30 minutes that we've got.
So
let's go. So let's go immediately into the very first one. Genesis chapter 3 verse 8. Then the man and his wife heard
the
sound of the Lord God as he was walking
in
the garden in the cool of the day. Before sin entered the world, well, Adam and Eve
was
experiencing the perfect
relationship
with God. God was walking.
God
was there.
Just
imagine that for a moment. Just imagine that relationship.
No
temple. No sacrifices. No barriers. No fear. Face to face.
Man. Man.
God was walking
among
his creation.
See,
humanity was not created merely to know about God,
but
to know God personally. God was walking
with
his creation.
Quite
a few years back,
when
my son was probably about
three
or four, we were in a shopping center.
And my
wife was working with him, and then she said, you walk with your dad. He was going from mom to dad, from mom to dad, and suddenly he was not working with mom and he was not walking with dad. Nowhere to be found.
We
looked around and he was gone.
Let
me tell you
that
for the next hour,
the
fact that he wasn't there,
we
panicked. Nothing mattered. Nothing. We were in a shopping center and everything we saw had no more any importance because
the
person
that
we loved
was
missing.
And
I remember very clearly one of my colleagues
and
for us, after an hour, we were lucky
that
suddenly from a distance we saw a woman with our child in his hands
with
an ice cream.
And
the relief
of
just seeing that.
But
I know of a friend of mine
a
colleague
who for
quite a while
didn't
see
his
child.
And the
panic that came through, how nothing mattered.
Nothing
mattered.
And
for days to be without
his
child. and he told me and I went through it for an hour
but
he went through it for days.
Nothing
mattered
when
there is separation.
Because
love
cannot
rest
while
separation exists. Love doesn't rest
when
separation exists.
And
when God wanted to walk with his creation yet when Adam and Eve
sinned there
was separation.
And
already for God
love cannot
rest
while
separation exists.
And
already
in
Eden
it
started.
the
plan of salvation already started. God
went
looking.
God
wanted to be to dwell
with
his creation. Let's move on then because we've got to go through the whole Bible. Let's go to Exodus.
And
it says then have them make a sanctuary for me and I will
dwell
dwell again and I will dwell
among
them.
There's
a story again.
A
story of a businessman who's always so busy always so busy and his daughter to say every evening
dad
come and play with me
come
and play with me. But he was so busy
he
was too busy.
But
then he realized that
I've
got to do something.
I've
got to do something because my daughter is always asking
for
me to play with him.
So
what he did
what
he did is one weekend he stayed back
and
built
a
cubby house.
First
week he built a frame. Second week he added furniture. Third week he painted all over. Man that cubby cubby house was so beautiful.
and
then one Sunday after he finished he called his daughter and said look
look
what I've built for you.
And
the daughter to smile
looking
at the cubby house
and
to say dad
are
you going to be
in
it
with
me?
You
see
that's
the moment that he realized
that
she never really wanted the house what she wanted
is
him.
The
structure
was
only valuable
if
his presence
was
inside it.
And
in the same way God doesn't say build me an impressive building so the nations can admire me. going back to Exodus chapter 25 build me a sanctuary
that
I may dwell among them. The tabernacle was never about architecture
it
was about presence.
God
wanted his people to wake up in the morning
to
open the tent flap
and
the first thing they would see
was
God
at
the center
of
the camp.
and
that was a reminder that God
is
always looking
to
be to dwell
with
them.
So
every tribe arranged their tents around the tabernacle
because
God was teaching them a lesson.
When
God
is
at the center
everything
else
finds
its proper place.
having
God at the center
everything
else
falls
into a place. Build me
a
tabernacle because I want to be with you. I want to dwell
with
you.
And
that was a tabernacle.
Let's
move on to the New Testament.
And
again
the
world
became
flesh
and
made is dwelling
among
us. Now
the
progression God
is
not just in the tabernacle in the center. Now God is walking
with
his people.
Now
he's touching
lepers.
Now he's blessing
children.
Now he's eating
with
sinners. Now he's calming
the
storms. Now he's weeping
at
grave sides. This God now has become approachable. God became one of us.
There's
a story again for each one. I just want to bring it home.
There
was a young man who was dying
and
he knew
he
didn't have long to go
and
he was in a hospital ward
and
as the darkness filled he became increasingly afraid.
The
chaplain
sat
beside him
through
the night
and
near dawn
the
soldier reached for his hand
and
whispered
thank
you
for
staying.
and
later on the chaplain will write nothing I said seemed to help him
but
my presence
did. And
this is the mystery of incarnation. He didn't just me God didn't just merely give us commandments
to
follow. He came himself.
He
entered our suffering.
He
walked our roads. He stood behind our graves. He carried
our
sins.
How
close does God
want
to be to us?
Close
enough
to
become one of us.
Let's
move on.
Book
of Corinthians
Don't
you know that you yourselves are God's temple
and
that God's spirit dwells in your midst?
Do
you not know that your bodies are temple
of
the Holy Spirit?
Remember
we started in Eden where God was walking.
We
moved on to the tabernacle where God was living in the center.
We
progressed further
and
now
what
God wants
is
to dwell
within
us.
Not
merely
within
his people
not
beside us
not
merely
among
us
but
within us.
Try
to explain that to Moses.
Try
to explain that to David. They knew that God was there
but
today
that
God wants to be even closer. He wants to dwell with us but he wants to dwell
within
you and I.
there's
a story again
of
a soldier
who
was away
and
he received a letter and a gift
from
his mom
much
later again
that
gift seemed to have been forgotten but that letter where a mom said I love you
I
always been thinking of you and for him it was presence presence
is
the most important thing
nothing the
feeling of not being abandoned
the
feeling of not being alone
how
much greater is the gift of the Holy Spirit
God
has not merely sent us a reminder of his love
he
has given us his very presence the God who once dwelt
behind
the veil behind the curtains
is
now within his people
his
presence
has
progressed into every into every scene that's what he wants to do he wants to dwell
in
us
Ephesians
chapter 22 and in him
and
he's talking about the church now not just
individuals
within the church but he talks about the church and in him you too are being built together
to
become a dwelling in which God lives by his spirit
again
the progression
not
living in individual Christians
but
us in his own church
a
few months ago
I've
got a grandchild
who
usually attends and today she's sick unfortunately
but
one day she asks her grandma
she
said grandma
well
grandma
my
mom said Jesus doesn't exist
you
tell me
Jesus
exists
but
I never see him
you
tell me stories about him but I want to see him I want to feel him I want to show my mom that Jesus exists and you can see already in a five year old that struggle in his mind how do I tell my mom
that
my Jesus
the
Jesus that I sing about every Sabbath when I come to church which I learn when I go to Sabbath school when you teach me how
do
I see him how do I feel him
the
answer
chapter
2 Ephesians 2 22
can
anyone
see
Jesus
through
us
because
he's dwelling in us anyone
see
Jesus
in
us
because
that's what it says
and
in him
you
two are being built together to become a dwelling you become a dwelling
he
came himself he didn't merely send commandments
he
came himself
and
he's dwelling
inside
each one of us
the
church
has
to become God's visible presence
in
the community
you
may be the only Bible
that
some people
will
ever read
and
sometimes I ask myself the question
when
people visit our church
do
they see grace
do
they see compassion
do
they see Jesus
we
become the living evidence
that
God is present
many
people will form opinions
about
God
before
ever opening a Bible
by
looking
at
his people at God's people
they
will make those judgments based
on
God's people
we
represent the one in whom
we
are rooted
and
I want to come to
the
last book of the Bible I'll tell you
we
were able to go through the whole Bible
and
I heard a loud voice from the throne saying look God's dwelling place is now among the people and he will dwell with them
they
will be his people and God himself
will
be with them and be their God
let
me ask you one final question
what if
the greatest gift of heaven
is
not
the
streets of gold
what
if it is not even being reunited
with
the loved ones
what
if the greatest gift
of
heaven is simply this
the
God we have longed for
will
be
fully
present
with
us
forever so
as we close let us return to the question that we asked earlier
how
close does God want to be to his people
how
close does God want to be with his people
look
at that progression again and I'll
remind
you of this
at
the start it was face to face
then
because of sin
a
tabernacle
just
to show that he's there in the center
and
as we go further he came
and
he walked with us
and
the progression goes even further not only is he walking with us but the Holy Spirit says he will live
within
us
and
not just us
but
with his church overall because at the end of the day
he
wants to be back into Eden again
to
be face to face
with
us again
and
I want to end with this
because
I want my grandchild
to
be able to look at me
and
say grandpère
I
can see Jesus now
I
can see Jesus because you are full of compassion
you
love the other
you
are prepared the commandments are there yes
but
everything that you do reflect
the
way Jesus was living
when
he was there
so
my Jesus
is
real
and
I can go and tell my mom
I
have seen Jesus
I
have tasted Jesus
and
this
is
the center
of
everything
I
remember the very first question that I asked you
why
be rooted in Christ
not
simply
because
of good morals
not
necessary of good habits not even sound theology
I
want to be rooted in Christ because he in the very first place wants to dwell in me
and
I want to close
we
will close with a song
and
I will invite my friends to come up
and
this song is the perfect summary
it
tells us
about
yes I want that walk with God I want to let God dwell in me
I
want to let him take over my life
everything
is possible
only
if we allow him
to
dwell in us
and
for me
rooted
in Christ
is
because he wants to dwell
in
me
let's
all stand up
and
sing our last song
yet
not I but through Christ in me
